If I try to repeat the same search using Spotlight (or, more specifically, Cmd-F) in a finder window, Spotlight will not return any search results. Using FAF, I can search within a folder and search results will appear immediately. Per a recommendation from my original post, I downloaded an app called Find Any File (FAF). The only items excluded from Spotlight are external drives that I use for back-up and storing my music. Spotlight is set to index my entire internal SSD. This problem is not related to Spotlight privacy settings. If I click on "This Mac", search results appear immediately. When a search is active in a finder window, an option appears to search "This Mac". (So, yes, Spotlight has indexed the drive.)īut if I navigate to a folder in a Finder window and enter a term in the search field in the window, Spotlight returns nothing. If I do a Spotlight search at the top level ("This Mac"), Spotlight returns results instantly. So now I have a new MBP, and it's running great - except that Spotlight still won't search within folders. (That was painful, because the previous Mac was less than 2 years old.) At that time I was having several other problems with my Mac (most notably, frequent kernel panics), and I thought that maybe there was some unique bug deep inside my Mac, so I finally broke down and bought a brand new M1 MacBook Pro. I originally posted last December, and got a lot of suggestions for things to try, but none of the suggestions solved the problem. Spotlight won't search within folders I'm reposting this question. but the spotlight window is not big enough to show the whole path - it always starts with three dots (.) so this is no help.Ĭannot resize the spotlight window - which drives me nuts!Īll other workarounds i found here or on the web are no help - like typing CMD + i which then closes the spotlight window (!) and opens the information about the file. In the spotlight window i can see the path to a certain file (holding CMD after marking the file in question). My idea was searching over spotlight but this really made me lose my mind. Is there a way to search on BOTH locations at the same time? but i have to remember where is what and also make every search twice. with these searches (one after the other) i get the needed results - so indexing works. this does not work - i can EITHER search on my local disk (on this mac) or on the network (shared). ![]() I try to search for a certain file on my lokal HD and also (at the same time) on the drives attached via network.
